Ranking indirect connections in literature-based discovery: The role of medical subject headings

search.) If there are no articles within the AC intersection, an intriguing question arises as to whether there might exist implicit or indirect connections between A and C based, for example, on an intermediate literature (B) for which both an AB relationship and a BC relationship have already been separately reported, but perhaps not considered together. It is usually pointless or at least inefficient to pursue indirect connections before conducting a broadly based literature search for direct connections and analyzing the relevant findings. Any direct connections that exist may eliminate or greatly change the problem and significance of indirect connections.

Ranking Indirect Connections in Literature-Based Discovery: The Role of Medical Subject Headings (MeSH)
Arrowsmith, a computer-assisted process for literature-based discovery, takes as input two disjoint sets of records (A,C) from the Medline database. It produces a list of title words and phrases, B, that are common to A and C, and displays the title context in which each B-term occurs within A and within C. Subject experts then can try to find A-B and B-C title-pairs that together may suggest n...

In order to design user-friendly information retrieval systems, it is important to pay attention to characteristics of users. Therefore, the aim of the present study is to investigate the role of demographic variables of users during their search in search engines. Method: This is an applied study in terms of purpose, which was done by the evaluation method. To conduct the research, firstly,...
متن کاملLearning Links in MeSH Co-occurrence Network - Preliminary Results
Literature-based discovery (LBD) is focusing on automatically generating scientific hypotheses by uncovering hidden, previously unknown relations between existing knowledge. Co-occurrences between biomedical concepts can be represented by a network that consists of a set of nodes representing concepts and a set of edges representing their relationships. In this work we propose a method for link...
متن کاملA new evaluation methodology for literature-based discovery systems
While medical researchers formulate new hypotheses to test, they need to identify connections to their work from other parts of the medical literature. However, the current volume of information has become a great barrier for this task. Recently, many literature-based discovery (LBD) systems have been developed to help researchers identify new knowledge that bridges gaps across distinct section...
متن کاملExploring Relevance as Truth Criterion on the Web and Classifying Claims in Belief Levels
The Web has become the most important information source for most of us. Unfortunately, there is no guarantee for the correctness of information on the Web. Moreover, different websites often provide conflicting information on a subject. Several truth discovery methods have been proposed for various scenarios, and they have been successfully applied in diverse application domains. In this paper...
